Stop 2: Guilin

Guilin is incredible! It is a crowded city with gigantic mountains shooting up in and around it.
Look at that! We spent the day hiking in this park. Yes, I survived and yes, it was worth it. Do you see those views?
Look at that! It looks fake! At this park there were also natural slides. I took a chinese kid down one.
Then there was a gigantic good luck slide. You had to climb stairs to the top of the mountain and then strap on this camo butt protecting gear, throw on some gloves and down this slide you went.
Talk about an adventure. This is what it looked like at the top of the mountain.
Everytime we went up a mountain the view killed me.
If you come to China you should come to southern China. After this we headed to Perdestrian Street. Here there are tons of shops and a giant food court. I got pineapple fried rice in a pineapple bowl. But I sat by a real pizzeria with actual pizza made by a white guy. He was big and bald and Rollin dough, he reminded me of my pops. Boy did that pizza smell good!
After dinner this happened. Why? I'm still not sure. I did it. I survived. I wasn't happy about it. Who thinks hey let me get a fish tank and put some big and small fish in there and then stick my feet inside. Yeah. That sounds like a great idea. Infact it will release toxins, be a massage, and those fish will eat all your dead skin. Now take a bunch of Americans and sit them down. Listen to them shriek and scream and yell. We counted to three, no one put their feet it.
Finally one brave soul does it and the screams that follow.
I couldn't do it but I knew I needed to so I though maybe if I put my feet in someone else's bowl then there will be lots of feet and less fish.
Gearing up. Yes I cried.
One foot. Then the lady came over, grabbed my feet and shoved them into my own bowl. She held my knees down and smacked them until I stopped squirming which is next to impossible because there and fish sucking and licking your toes.
As you can see I never got use to it and I never enjoyed it. It was ___. Go to China and find out.
At the end of the night I ran into
Hannah! But I only got to see her for like ten minutes bc them my group left. Too bad we have so mucky to catch up on!
Guilin has been amazing and right now I am on my way to the rice terraces with 13 from my group, 4 foreign Aussies, and 3 from Mexico. Today will surely be another adventure.
Is this real life?
Why yes it is.

Stop 1: Guangzhou

When we finally landed in Guangzhou it was 2am. Then we had to try and get taxis to the hostel. Having 13 people is never a good number.
Have you seen what 5 girls look like in the back of a taxi with all their luggage piled ontop of them. It is hilarious! Furthermore at 3am when driving down deserted Chinese streets do you want to know what you see? Huge, and I mean huge rats. Gross. We finally arrive and after getting checked in I am greeted by the most beautiful sight: a full sized bed, with a memory topper, a down comforter and two amazing pillows. I wanted to cry of happiness. Really though it's inedible.
Then we set off of our adventure. First we went to this little island that was like New Orleans. The trees were incredible and covered in thick vines and moss. The buildings were architecturally beautiful and the island was just adorable!
There were gardens and statues and more!
This city is so pretty!
That is friendship garden.
After this we got on a boat and rode around the Pearl River on our way to this giant tower. Then we got on a metro that was so neat! It has a glass front so you could see all the tunnels.
We may or may not have fought some kids for our seats in the front.
Guangzhou Day 1 has been full of beauty!

Magnum Meltdown

Three weeks ago I walked past the trash in my bathroom and beheld the most beautiful piece of trash ever; a Magnum Bar wrapper. If you are unfamiliar with Magnum you should head to your nearest store now and purchase A. Chocolate and caramel or B. White chocolate vanilla bean. You can thank me later. These are icecream bars people.
After interrogating my roommate I set out on the hunt to find me a Magnum bar. After three weeks and many failed attempts I still had not located this Holy Grail.
Fast forward.
Yesterday we set off on a month long vacation. Our school has the whole month off for Chinese Nee Year and we are using this time to travel to Southern China.
After arriving at the airport and going through security we found our 6:15 plane was delayed until 6:50. Then until 7:30. Then until 8:40. Then 9:20. Then 10:10. Then 10:51. Everytime the Chinese voice came on the intercom I wanted to cry. After hours of sitting in the airport trying to deal with Chinese internt
It was finally late enough that Sarah was awake and I could talk to her on her drive to work. We are having a good conversation when Nichole and Mikele walk up and in their hands are Magnum Bars. I literally flew out of my seat, grabbed her wrist, and ran to the moving walkway. In the process poor Sarah got disconnected. So there I am headphones in, phone in hand, Nichole in other hand practically sprinting to the store they found it in.
She told me they had to dig to find one that was not coffee flavored so dig I did. There at the very bottom in the very dark corner lay one last beautiful chocolate covered Magnum bar. I snatched it and paid the 15 Y. As I opened the wrapper with lips salivating I beheld:
The biggest let down. Ever. A mangeled and tortured bar. So broken, so refrozen, and so freezer burnt that it could not be saved. Not even by the most desperate of taste buds. It's short life ended in the trash can and I wept.
Fast forward. We arrived in Guangzhou at 4am. Slept. Woke up and went on an adventure.
I found myself a new Magnum bar. Yet it's glory was none like the USA. Therefore, I resign my quest. And consider it an American delicacy that I will partake in in five months time.
Until then Magnum.

Beijing Temples and Shopping

Our last two days were spent with temple and shopping. Saturday we headed to The Temple of Heaven.
On our way in there was a cute little lady dancing and Taylor went and danced with her.
Before we knew it we were all dancing with her. She was so cute and so happy.
Then onto the temple we went.
The temple was beautiful but you couldn't go inside. The outside was very ornate and colorful. We took pictures and walked the grounds. Nick is a videographer and is very, very good so we also shot some footage. I was filming the boys doing handstands. Picture this: Jerem is standing in the middle smiling while nick is hand walking around him in circles. Meanwhile Joe is trying to do handstands. At the exact moment while I am filming and yell "look at Joe's moves" he catapults his legs into Jerem sending Jerem flying into Nick and crash landing onto the floor. All of them now sprawled on the ground laughing hysterically while the Chinese stare wide eyed. It wAs an amazing display of human dominoes.
Then off to the Pearl Market. The pearl market has a food court inside that is so delicious. It was hands down the BEST chinese food we have found since being here and if I could eat in that food court everyday for the rest of the trip I would! The food was delicious and full of flavor!
After a full belly the bargaining started. The Pearl Mart is HUGE! There is SO Much to see and even more to buy. We spent 4 hours in there and easily could have spent way more. Also spent 1,000 yuan. But hey I got some great deals. The Chinese and incredibly pushy. They will literally grab you as they are screaming at you trying to get you to buy anything. It's intimidating but also a fun challenge. If you go to Beijing plan a full day of shopping. You won't regret it.
After that we got some boba. I'm addicted to boba. I think it will be the death of me. It's the only thing I've ever wanted to drink besides water and I want it all the time.
This is Jenny she strung all the pearls I bought. Necklaces, bracelets, earrings. Oh pearls, pearls, and more pearls.
Oh! On one of these days we discovered the cookies. Those really good ones. Yeah we went back everyday. So good!
That night we wanted to find the night market with all the crazy food. That was supposed to be an easy thing, but nothing is ever easy. First of all by this point my feet were in screaming pain. We had been on them nonstop for three days. We literally only stopped to eat and sleep. I had blisters and blood in addition to the bunions that have to be cut out of my feet when I get home. It hurt so bad. Not even after working weddings had I ever been in so much pain. The boys also seem to think a hey I'm running a marathon pace is acceptable. All day. Every day. It took all I had to try and keep up with them. So we head out in search of this market but we don't know where so we start asking people where you can eat scorpions. Good thing Jerem took some Chinese, he's been a saving grace.   Down dark alleys we go, around corners, up hugongs, all while racing the clock because the market closes at 9:00 and its 8:30. Finally after a really long time and a lot of pain we find this place.
The smells. Oh the smells. Talk about disgusting. Almost as disgusting as all the food on sticks including: baby sharks,  crickets, grasshoppers, silk worms, starfish, seahorse, snake, scorpions, tarantulas, and other disgusting things. Some made me gag just looking at them.
I was brave and tried fruit on a a stick dipped in candy.
That was good! Then I got real adventurous and got some corn. It was gross.
Then came the real fun.
No, I did not eat it. BUT I faced a fear and put that thing on my tongue. I almost cried.
Taylor then bought starfish that was filled with some disgusting black gunk. I don't even want to know.
He eats anything. Too bad the tarantula was 80 yuan or he would have eaten that too.
After the food we found the neatest high class outdoor mall that reminded me of London. However it was closing. Sad day. So began our walk back to the hostel.
On our way out of the metro there is this little street stand that sells corn and roasted meats etc. They were blasting some chinese pop and so of course the boys start to dance and Taylor gets way into it, performing a show for all to see. Soon the Chinese and stopping to watch his dance moves that one day should be taken to Vegas. So there we are watching him in awe and then a Chinesean comes up and starts doing this robot move and soon we are all doing this robot moves. Except me who looks like a monkey scratching my arm pits but that's okay. It was a fun night nonetheless dancing in the streets. Oh and then every time we got on or off the metro the lady who runs the food cart would laugh and wave. Too fun.

The next morning we got up and went to the Llama temple. The Llama temple was beautiful. They were having an Incense burning ceremony and we got to burn incense.
There were a lot of people there and the clouds on incense smoke were intense. My mother would have died. As we walked to the back of the temple we saw the biggest buddah! It was in the Guiness. Book of world records because it was carved from one single tree and was 26 m high.
It was so tall! After we explored and looked at the beauty of the temple and got to see inside the Chinese culture we headed to the Olympic park.
It was neat to walk where hundreds of famous athletes from all over the world had once gathered. We made this a short stop because we were hungry and wanted to go back to the pearl mart to eat. Also to buy more things, obviously. Lol. Okay I wanted boba too. From there we high tailed it back to the hostel, grabbed our bags, and headed to the metro to board our bullet train back to nanjing. Took 12 hours to get here and only 4.5 to get home. Beijing was incredible experience and I'm so glad I got to have this adventure and get to hang with the guys all weekend. ✌️

The Wall, The Great Wall

Today was simply amazing. A typical Friday in my life.
Got up and began a journey I will never forget.
Step 1: board the metro to the bus station.
Step 2: find bus 916. Get on bus.
Step 3: the China man on the bus says come follow me and puts us in his mini van and drives us to Mutiyano or something like that.
Step 4: try and buy tickets. Major pain in the butt but we found student tickets!
Step 5: buy china hats so that when on the wall you can look like even more of a tourists with your selfie stick and fanny pack
Step 6: go to ski lift. Get on ski lift. Freak out because you've never been on a ski lift. Grip bar in death grip whole way up because ski lift is super scary. But be amazed by the views because you are on a ski lift to the Great Wall of china!
Step 7: begin adventure on the wall. Really, it was incredible. It was also A LOT of steps. But what an experience. First we found the place where you are allowed to graffiti on the wall and signed our names with a little piece of chalk we found.
Then we went in a tower and got to see the amazing view.
Then we hiked down part and then up. Straight up! The stairs were so steep!
The views once we got up were so beautiful.
There were hardly any people on the wall.  We saw maybe 20 different people.
Jerem and I in our total tourist outfits.
What an amazing part of history we got to experience!
Step 8: the toboggan.
5,000 meters of winding insane fun. It was scary but incredible! So, so, so much fun! We twisted and turned all the way down the mountain with the Great Wall behind us on a slide that was incredible!

It's not every day you ski lift to the top of the Great Wall of China, then hike it and end by sliding down on a giant toboggan.
What an experience.

Beijing, A Travel Guide

Beijing Getaway
So, you’ve decided to head to Beijing but now what? With a city full of 11.5 million people and thousands of things to do and see how do you narrow it down? Well for one we decided to stay at stops all close to the metro and within a reasonable area, minus The Great Wall of course because that is just a requirement of China. So here is how we divided up our four day trip based on a winter adventure.
Season: Winter, January 2015
Time: Wednesday Night through Sunday Night.
Hostel: The Three Legged Frog
(Good location and the hostel was decent but the people were incredibly rude and unhelpful. We would not stay there again. Make sure your hostel is near a metro stop.)
Cost: $218
4 Day Schedule:
Budget:
  • Hostel: 117 Y total 3 nights
  • Food: 35 Y a day
  • Great Wall Transportation: 92Y bus, ski lift, slide 138 Y
  • Forbidden City: 20Y
  • Temple of Heaven: 30Y
  • Lama Temple: 25Y
  • Metro: 20Y a day
  • Train: $40 for hard sleeper, $73 bullet train home
TOTAL: $218, American Dollars
Night 1: Board the 10pm night sleeper train. You can buy tickets at chinaguide.com but you will have to pay fees so instead we went to the train station. Keep in mind you can only buy them 4 days before you are leaving though and you will need passports in order to go and pick them up. When on the train make sure to keep your ticket handy at all times. You will need it to get on the train, during the train, and to get out of the train station. Do not loose this ticket.
P.S. Pay the tiny bit extra to take the hard sleeper and actually have a chance at sleep. You do not want to start your vacation in a sleep deprived cranky state.
Tips: Take ear plugs, an eye mask, water, Dramamine if you get sick, toilet paper, face wipes, breakfast, and keep your toothbrush and paste handy.
Day 1: Arrival.
-Check into hostel.
-Eat. (Seriously. People always forget to eat or skip meals to save money but don’t do that. You need to eat. Being hangry is never fun for anyone. Tip: I always keep trail mix on me at all times for emergency hangry monsters)
-Tiananmen Square (1 hour) cost: Free
The metro stops in Beijing always have the big touristy things labeled. Tiananmen Square and The Forbidden City and right next to each other and if you get a hostel in walking distance that’s even better because it is a very central location.
-Forbidden City (3-5 hours) cost: 20Y
Give yourself time here to see everything. This place is very big and the more you explore the more you find. Make sure to locate the gardens.
Tips: Wear comfortable shoes and when you pay get the student discount. Bring a guidebook or do research before hand so you know what you are looking at. You can rent an audio guide for 40Y.
-Malls near night market. Wangfujing Street
Directions: Take subway line 1 and get off at Wangfujing, exit from A
This is an upscale fun shopping area. Are you deprived of H&M, Zara, Sephora? Head to the mall just to explore. Many of the shops open up outside to cute streets.
-Night Market (1 hour) open 6-9pm Cost: 10Y-80Y
Name: Donghuamen
Location: north of Donganmen Street, Dongcheng District Right by malls
Fancy eating scorpion? How about chomping on a spider? Well if food on a stick is what you desire head to the market and you won’t be disappointed. Walking down all the stalls and being mesmerized and disgusted by what you are seeing is always an experience. For those less adventurous they have candy dipped fruit, fried bananas, chow mien, dumplings and other street foods. For those who want to get their crazy on you can find baby sharks, centipedes, scorpions, tarantulas, grasshoppers, sea horses, starfish and so much more. Average cost: 80Y tarantula, 50Y huge scorpion, 15 Y baby scorpion, 20Y starfish, 15 Y fried bananas, 10Y fruit on a stick. You can barter here but they won’t go very low. However at the end of the night right before closing they are a little more willing to negotiate.
Day 2:
-Great Wall: Mutianyu Cost: 138Y (bus, ski lift, entrance, toboggan) Travel: 84Y
You can book a tour with your hostel from 250-300Y per person but w chose to do it on our own. This is how: Take a metro to the bus hall, get on bus 916 and tell them you are going to Mutianyu. We got lucky and the man on our bus took us to his mini van and drove us to the wall entrance. We negotiated 30Y per person each way. He then waited there for us to be done and then took us back to the bus stop. The price for a shuttle up to the ski lift, the ski lift, the entrance to the wall, and the toboggan down was 138 Y on a student discount. Do the toboggan, it is the coolest experience ever. Don’t cheap out.
Tips: Bring lunch and have a picnic on the great wall. Wear sneakers or very comfortable shoes this part of the wall is almost all stairs. Bring water and a backpack full of food.
-Dinner
-Explore Houhai Hutongs/ Shichahai Lake
This is a fun place to walk around at night and get lost in the lights and charm. We were there in winter and the lake is frozen solid. You can ice skate and even ice bike on the lake.
Day 3:
-Temple of Heaven 30Y
Location: Subway Line 5: get off at Tiantan Dongmen Station, Leave from Exit A and you'll find the East Gate of the Park.
Temple of Heaven is right across the street from the Peal Mart. It is a beautiful temple up on a slight hill with views of the city. It is a large park as well where you can walk around different gardens and explore. You cannot go into the temple but you can peek inside through viewing area.
Tips: The 30Y ticket is a combination ticket that lets you into multiple places. We didn’t know this when entering and only did the Temple. So check which ticket you want before you purchase.
-Lunch at Pearl Market
The food court at the Pearl Market is incredible! It is the best food we’ve had in China. The way it works is you first go to the card counter and give them money and they will give you a card with that amount on it. We put 100Y bills on it so that we could get change back. Then you use the card at the food place of your choice. When you are done eating you take the card back to the card place and they will give you your remaining balance. Eat here. Just do it. Price: 10Y-40Y. We spent 16 Y for big plates of noodles or rice.
-Pearl Market (shopping)
Location: Across street from Temple of Heaven.
The Pearl Market is not just pearls, do not let the name fool you. It is an enormous building full of shopping so be prepared to spend hours here. There are also ATM’s on the bottom floor for when you need to spend more but I would suggest going with a budget. The bottom floor is electronics, scarves, make up, and ties. The middle floor is purses, shoes, suits, and clothing. The top floor is pearls, knick knacks, and jewelry. The whole place is indoors.
Tips: See the price list below for the best deals we found. Do not be afraid to walk away. You will not hurt their feelings and you will find the same thing again and 5 other stalls. Always look around and feel out prices from multiple stalls before buying! The worst is when you think you got a good deal and then find out you could have gone way lower. Speaking of which once you buy something accept it. Accept what you paid for it and move on.
Explore night Hutong
At night we just picked an ally to explore. The small little alleys are called Hutongs and are so fun to walk down and explore. There are little shops and markets as well to buy fun things.
Day 4:
Lama Temple Cost: 25Y
Location: Subway Line 5: get off at Yonghegong Station, and get out of the station from Exit C (Southeast Exit).
The Lama Temple is a beautiful temple to walk around and explore. Make sure you get all the way to the back because inside is a Guinness World Record Buddha that stands at 26m high and is carved all from one tree. We got lucky the day we went and they were having an incense ceremony which was an amazing cultural experience.
-Olympic Park Cost: 50Y
Location: Take Subway Line 10 to Beitucheng then switch to Subway Line 8 (Olympic Special Line): get off at Olympic Sports Center Station, get out of the station from Exit B1 (northwest exit) or Exit B2 (northeast exit), and walk north to it.
We headed to Olympic Park for a quick walk. We did not go into any of the buildings but just had a quick look around.
-Train Home
Again, remember to keep your train ticket on you at all times. We took the fast train home and it was only about 4 hours instead of 12. Make sure you have some snacks, especially if you have not eaten dinner.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-Summer Palace (didn’t go but heard it’s beautiful) Beihai Park – looks incredible but we did not have time to go here either.
